Is the river flowing within its banks again? Ah yes, the designers carry on merrily as if in a sandbox; Pataki sends in the Wolf to clean up; Childs revs up the engines to finally get his way; Libeskind is in exile, still brandishing the height and location of the tower as his creative imprint (wow); and while the papers flag the NYPD "interference," no one, including the legendary populist design revolt (circa 2002), has cried 'foul' at a tower redesigned according to little of the previous public or professional visions. (remember this? or this?) Hegemony keeps its fingers crossed.

A little more about Libeskind's globetrotting. he says in the Observer (Childs link above):
While he was traveling around the globe, Mr. Libeskind missed another, though dubious, challenge to his architectural authority. Donald Trump called the architect an "egghead" in the New York Post and exhorted the Governor to rebuild the Twin Towers as they once were. When told of the story, Mr. Libeskind gave a hearty laugh. "He should come to my office and take a look at the condominiums we are designing, and the commercial buildings. We will give Donald Trump a run for his money."
So while he is not passing through airports and visiting foreign dignitaries as US Cultural Ambassador, he is caught in this voluntary condo-world exile from architecture? Wasn't there a discussion where we could see what the Ambassador was dreaming up?
Gov. George E. Pataki will appoint his chief of staff to take control of the rebuilding effort in Lower Manhatta...
Mr. Pataki, in a speech today to the Association for a Better New York, is to announce that John P. Cahill, one of his closest aides, is set to leave Albany to spend the majority of his time working on the complex, multibillion-dollar redevelopment project...
