Construction of Snøhetta's Shanghai Grand Opera House is rapidly progressing towards a 2025 completion in the city's Pudong District. The firm, which is working with ECADI locally, won an international competition for its design in 2019. We last updated its progress in October 2023. The two firms have also collaborated on the new Beijing Library, which was named the winner of the 2024 IFLA/Baker & Taylor Public Library of the Year Award yesterday.

The spiral is interesting, but I have trouble connecting to an opera house or anything similar. Also it takes up a lot of space without contributing to the program, except perhaps to provide a place to sit and enjoy the view? It feels gratuitous.
That's always been Snohetta's MO: the big walkable roof above the concert hall. BIG also adopted the same approach at Prague. Turns out organizers love this stuff.
Not sure if it's the organizers loving this kind of stuff. I think its more about the cities investing in starchitecture, more than anything.
