Construction is progressing at Denver’s One River North, designed by MAD Architects.
The sixteen-story tower broke ground in late 2021 and represents MAD’s first residential rental building in the United States, expected to contain 187 units.
The scheme’s defining exterior element is a sharp carved opening midway up the tower, cutting through the upper section of the tower towards the roof. The opening will contain a network of footpaths and planting. A rooftop pool, spa, and garden areas complete the 216-foot-tall structure.
“If we regard modern cities as man-made landscapes on the earth, we need to design canyons, woods, creeks, and waterfalls, transforming concrete forests into second nature,” MAD founder Ma Yansong said about the development in 2021.
News of the scheme comes weeks after MAD Architects completed a ‘train station in the forest’ in China. In January, meanwhile, the firm designed a Chinese waterfront arts center as a ‘gently ripple by the lake.’
