UNStudio has completed a flagship store for the Chinese communications giant Huawei in Shanghai.
Designed in collaboration with Huawei’s internal design team, the store seeks to create an “experience-rich concept that brings people, nature, and technology together and caters to consumer preferences.”
According to the architects, the design of the two-level store was inspired by biophilic forms that transition between indoor and outdoor conditions. Throughout the scheme’s interior and exterior, recycled materials are integrated to reduce the project’s environmental footprint, while detachable prefabricated systems are applied on floors and ceilings.
The building’s facade makes reference to the algorithm underscoring Huawei’s polar codes technology, with petal-like features appearing to be in different stages of growth, evolving in scale and rotation to form an “integrated geometric system that combines the brand with nature and technology.” The stems of the oversized petals obscure the structural mullions of the external glazing, forming a transparent facade to maximize views and natural light into the store. At night, meanwhile, lighting elements embedded in the petals’ edges emit a soft glow across the facade.
The store’s interior is anchored by a spiraling ‘Tree of Harmony’ which serves as a primary circulation route between the two floors, while also incorporating AR experiences for visitors to engage in a “sensory experience of nature through sight, sound, and smell.” Across the spaces, a color palette of warm tones includes ivory ceilings and floors alongside columns clad in wood and glass fiber-reinforced concrete.
The display and showcase areas inside the store include the ‘Signature Experience’ zones for exhibits and services and five ‘Consumer Full Scenario Experience’ zones that allow visitors to interact with the products such as smartwatches and smart cars. Both floors of the showroom are punctuated with spaces for gatherings, public lectures, and cultural activities, while a cafe is incorporated across the lecture and event space.
“Among the many interfaces found in retail nowadays, the flagship store we have created for Huawei in Shanghai is one that blends interactive experiences, technology, and community creation,” said UNStudio founder Ben van Berkel about the scheme. “The new store reimagines modern retail spaces as inviting environments that promote a sense of community and provide a contemporary venue for consumers and visitors to meet, share and innovate.”
The store’s completion comes one week after UNStudio unveiled its design for the world’s highest-standing spokeless Ferris wheel in Seoul, South Korea. Earlier this month, meanwhile, the firm presented a mixed-use scheme in Hangzhou, China, comprised of four towers.
