Following last week’s visit to Richmond-based 3North, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to New York City this week to explore the work of JG Neukomm Architecture.
Founded in 2017 by Jean-Gabriel Neukomm, the firm operates on the premise that “great architecture requires a bold vision for collaboration, a commitment to honor the histories of site and community, and an embrace of intelligent, lasting design.” This ethos has led the firm to build a portfolio ranging from luxury residential and hospitality to large-scale urban projects.
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for a Project Manager to join their New York office. For candidates interested in applying for the position, or anybody interested in learning about the firm’s output, we have rounded up four interior projects by Jean-Gabriel Neukomm that exemplify the studio’s ethos.
A 51-story tower comprising studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom residences, Hayden is imagined as a “village within the industrial buzz of Long Island City.” Inside, the entrance is lined with naturally colored wood and a pear-colored lighting fixture, while throughout, a lighting scheme reflects the area’s technology and manufacturing economies through exposed bulbs obscured by metal mesh. Among the scheme’s amenities are a 7th-floor yoga studio with a shaded pergola, and a 3rd floor basketball court.
“The ability to move freely through amenity spaces, like the gym and outdoor screening theater, creates the impression of Hayden being a town within a city,” Neukomm explains. “At the core of every design decision is the promotion of strong community energy. The strategy was to find a way to give each space its own identity while remaining a part of the whole.”
The project was originally overseen from 2013 by SPAN Architecture, and taken over by JG Neukomm Architecture in 2017. Jean-Gabriel Neukomm was the principal-in-charge for the duration of the project.
Neukomm developed the interiors for the L.A. Metropolis residences by drawing inspiration from Los Angeles’ art deco history. Inside the scheme, custom wall panels surround the lobby, while in the residences, a material palette of grays and creams creates a minimal backdrop to city views. Among the technologies deployed to deliver the interiors were digital printing, robot-controlled mosaic fabrication, and laser-cut metal fabrication.
“In the landscape of residential developments today, many projects seem disconnected from their environments, missing the opportunity to engage with their surroundings,” Neukomm notes. “When we began our work on the L.A. Metropolis complex, we were very interested in challenging this pervasive model, and looked to the rich architectural history of downtown Los Angeles for guidance.”
The project was originally overseen from 2014 by SPAN Architecture, and taken over by JG Neukomm Architecture in 2017. Jean-Gabriel Neukomm was the principal-in-charge for the duration of the project.
The Fabien Baron Residence saw an extensive renovation of an existing West Village home for Interview Magazine editorial director Fabien Baron. The goal of the project was to integrate a modern, minimalist design within a historic townhouse. The resulting scheme saw the restoration of the building’s facade, including new, historically-reflective decorative cast iron elements.
Inside, meanwhile, a contemporary environment has been created to contrast with the historic interior. Among the requirements for the interior was a soft, minimal atmosphere to place emphasis on the client’s collection of vintage French furniture and fashion plants.
From commencement in 2011, the project was delivered by SPAN Architecture, with Jean-Gabriel Neukomm serving as principal-in-charge for the duration of the project.
Situated within Brooklyn’s Fort Greene area, the Ashland residential development was designed with an interior prioritizing a “refined aesthetic with punches of bold graphics, and a deep interest in materiality.” The lobby features a custom mosaic designed based on Neukomm’s photography, highlighting details from the surrounding historical neighborhoods.
“Exterior spaces will work in tandem with interior rooms to host parties both inside and out,” Neukomm explains. “The penthouse floor features sunset and sunrise lounges as additional amenity spaces.”
