"In New York City, a $150,000 salary feels like $54,000
For many, earning a salary topping $US100,000 ($151,000) feels like a
mark of success — but how far it goes depends on where you live. In New
York City, that annual paycheck is worth just $US36,000, after taxes and accounting for the steep cost of living."

^ ^ I never understood these sensationalist salary articles. It always comes off as click-baity. The target audience is people who ... don't live in NYC? Maybe to appease their invented suspicions that its an unlivable urban environment? The truth is that the articles always grab median/average costs that are totally inflated valuations compared to what actual New Yorkers experience every day. There are plenty of affordable neighbourhoods all around the city; cherry-picking numbers to arrive at a conclusion is of no use.
NYC = The Nice Parts of Manhattan in most of these articles. The other boroughs might as well not exist.
Pretty much. God forbid you actually move to a real neighborhood with *actual* new yorkers living as your neighbours outside of [Manhattan-south-of-110th].
Plus the average and median Manhattan rent data is disproportionately skewed (inflated?) by all the luxury units.
And the fact that these rich influencer type kids are willing to pay whatever number because dad's quietly footing the bill. "Oh you just moved from Ohio and live in Chelsea and appear to wander aimlessly from coffeeshop to tavern all day with no discernible source of income? that makes sense!"
