Studio Gang has been selected to lead the Phase 1 Implementation of Denver’s Civic Center Next 100 revitalization plan targeted at its Greek Theater and Central Promenade along 14th Avenue.
The firm received a $2.8 million design contract for the project and was chosen based on an approach that was “rooted in a community-centered process [and] respects the historic aspects of the park while bringing innovative architectural design,” according to a press announcement.
The project is being delivered with extensive community and stakeholder engagement. The Concept Design also calls for improvements to the Central Gathering Space and Bannock Street between Colfax Avenue and 14th Avenue. Denver’s Mayor Mike Johnston said it will prepare the space for “the next 100 years.”
“We are looking forward to working closely with the city, the conservancy, and the communities of Denver on the design for Civic Center that extends its democratic legacy and invites everyone to come together around performance. It is also a perfect moment to make the park’s ecology resilient for its next 100 years of life,” founding principal and partner Jeanne Gang added in a statement.
The firm will look to past projects for the Tom Lee Park in Memphis and Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago in the delivery of its design, which is being funded in part through a $2.3 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Studio Gang also announced its Populous hotel project near the site last spring. It will be realized as the “first carbon-positive hotel” design in the United States. Additional details about the Civic Center Park Next 100 project can be found here.
