Following last week’s visit to Portland, MA-based Woodhull, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Santa Barbara this week to explore the work of ANACAPA.
From their studios across Santa Barbara, CA and Portland, OR, the firm has built a portfolio spanning hospitality, custom residential, creative offices, and urban infill mixed-use projects. The studio operates along three core values, namely ‘community’ (including improving the quality of life for current and future citizens), ‘innovation’ (including an open exchange of ideas, insights, and expertise), and ‘sustainability’ (including optimizing the social, cultural, and environmental impacts of space).
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for an architectural designer. For candidates interested in applying for the position, or anybody interested in learning about the firm’s output, we have rounded up five rural retreats by ANACAPA that exemplify the studio’s ethos.
Located on one of the last remaining undeveloped coastal areas in California, the Off-Grid Guesthouse sought to balance residential development with ecological preservation. The resulting scheme strikes a low visual and environmental profile disguised by a green roof. Taking advantage of the site’s panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding hills, the home incorporates a large quantity of sliding glass alongside expansive decks that cantilever over the foundation’s steep rock face.
With no electricity available in the area, both the guesthouse and nearby owner’s residence are completely off-grid. The home is 100% powered by a photovoltaic energy system while LED lighting and low-usage appliances were specified to reduce energy demands. Meanwhile, a material palette of steel of concrete is designed to weather naturally over time, while an interior palette of rich walnut accents adds warmth and character.
Set on 35 acres in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, AutoCamp Yosemite features a 4,000-square-foot clubhouse for the hospitality brand with a reception, meeting space, indoor/outdoor lounge areas, and a curated marketplace offering artisanal food and beverages. Accommodations associated with the clubhouse include luxury tents, cabin suites, and deluxe Airstream trailers, also designed by ANACAPA.
“With the iconic Airstream as a starting point, we looked to modernist masterpieces for inspiration,” the studio explains. “The resulting clean, rectilinear planes of the clubhouse complement the surrounding landscape and set the tone for the polished rural retreat. For the interiors, Geremia Design took cues for the material palate from the spectacular environs, mixing sophisticated contemporary lines with rough-hewn materials.”
Located on an exclusive mountaintop site surrounded by canyons, the Panoramic Coastal Ranch comprises three custom structures: a four-bedroom main house, a one-bedroom guest house, and a barn. The three forms were designed in a congruous architectural style and placed to assimilate with the topography of the hilltop.
The scheme is built with an “understated” material palette including a metal standing seam roof, heavy timber natural fir columns, clear-finish cedar siding, and board-formed concrete. An abundance of Fleetwood sliding glass doors and windows allow expansive views of the surrounding landscape from the interior. Given the scheme’s isolated location on a wildlife preserve, the site also holds its own well and septic system alongside minimal drought-tolerant landscaping.
The Vista Residence saw ANACAPA transform an existing dwelling by maintaining the existing footprint and structure but completely reimagining the interior floor plan. The material palette was redeveloped to highlight natural tones and textures found in the surrounding landscape, while the original exterior siding was replaced with weathered shou sugi ban siding.
Inside, an open, airy main living section was created through the incorporation of enclosed accessory spaces. An interior palette of concrete and smooth gypsum siding was incorporated to bring light into the space and modernize the home, while dropped ceilings were removed to expose the wooden ceiling structure and create more open, expansive spaces.
For AutoCamp’s Russian River site, ANACAPA created a 3,000-square-foot mid-century modern-inspired clubhouse with 24 custom Airstreams and 10 luxury tents. The open-air clubhouse was designed to maximize views of the surrounding redwood forest and adjacent creek from the interiors, which were designed by Geremia Design.
“Fabricated from board-formed concrete walls, rough-sawn redwood ceilings, and blackened steel, the pavilion captures the material qualities of its location and was developed to withstand the sometimes harsh conditions of the relative climate,” ANACAPA explains. “The Clubhouse's impressive mid-century modern-inspired design features a reception area and communal dining, gathering, and events spaces for guests.”
