Copenhagen/Reykjavik-based Esja Architecture, in collaboration with Arkibygg Arkitektar, has unveiled plans for a ring-shaped viewing platform to be located 2,100 feet above sea level on the slopes of Mount Bjólfur, Iceland. Named the Ring of Bjólfur, the platform will overlook the scenic, artistic town of Seydisfjordur, as well as a fjord that houses the only ferry connection from Iceland to mainland Europe.
The platform measures 105 feet in diameter and will offer visitors a continuous walkway and seating arrangement around its 330-foot circumference. The scheme is secured to the landscape using four anchoring points, while the slightly sloping structure remains entirely wheelchair accessible.
The three predominant materials to be used in the scheme’s construction are concrete for the primary form, local larch for the inner railing, and stainless steel for the outer railing. Chosen in part to reflect the crisp nature of the surrounding environment, the palette is also designed to withstand the region's formidable weather conditions while demanding minimal maintenance.
Named after the Viking Bjólfur, the mountain is believed to be the final resting place of the settler who established Seydisfjordur. Drawing inspiration from the Viking tradition of being buried with prized possessions, the Ring of Bjólfur aims to symbolize a valued silver ring from the Viking forefather.
Having been chosen to deliver the scheme from a 2021 competition, Esja Architecture believes the attraction will be completed in 2024. The full design team for the project comprises Arkibygg Arkitektar & Esja Architecture (architects), ANNA Landslagsarkitekt & Kjartan Mogensen (landscape architects), and exa nordic (engineers).
