Following last week’s look at an opening for an Engagement Coordinator at The New York Review of Architecture, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open position on Archinect Jobs for the Architecture Program Chair at the University of Michigan.
Based in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the role calls for an individual to chair the school’s architecture program for a three-year renewable term beginning July 1st, 2024. Candidates for the position must hold or qualify for a tenure or practice track appointment in the architecture program at an associate or full professor level, and display a “record of distinction in teaching and in professional, scholarly, and/or creative achievement.”
Why the role interests us
The open position at Taubman College offers us the opportunity to explore the work of a school that has recently displayed a progressive position on issues from 3D printing to artificial intelligence. Last week, we covered the college’s unveiling of an “ultra-lightweight, waste-free concrete,” which was 3D printed using a unique approach that blended autonomous construction with computational design.
Over recent months, meanwhile, the college has hosted a series of symposia on the subject of artificial intelligence and neural architecture. Led by Dr. Matias Del Campo, the events have explored the proliferation of artificial intelligence in the design process and the built environment, encompassing issues such as ethics, representation, and copyright.
Last year, the college saw an influx of awards and scholarships covered by our editorial. In November, Taubman College was gifted $1.35 million for a scholarship that supports future Masters of Urban and Regional Planning students, while in September, The Graham Foundation announced Taubman doctoral candidate Dicle Taskin as the winner of the Carter Manny Award for writing.
