Following last week’s look at an opening for an Architect at the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open position on Archinect Jobs for a Shop Manager at Studio Sanford Biggers.
The role, based in Biggers’ New York City studio, calls for an individual prepared to be responsible for “organizing and executing in-house production” of the studio’s artistic projects. Ideal experience requested for within candidates includes proficiency with wood and light metal fabrication, and a demonstrated experience with artwork and design fabrication.
Why the role interests us
The role in Sanford Biggers’ studio offers an opportunity to reflect on the work of the Los Angeles-born artist; whose unique approach to fabrication and materiality is sure to create an engaging environment for the candidate who fills the shop manager role.
Described by the studio as “an interplay of narrative, perspective, and history that speaks to current social, political, and economic happenings,” Biggers' work frequently dwells on overlooked cultural and political narratives from American history. Though united in outlook, Biggers’ work takes on many material forms, from timber to wax, and marble to quilts.
Acclaimed outputs of Biggers’ studio include BAM, a series that sees fragments of wooden African statues dipped and veiled with thick wax before being ballistically ‘resculpted.’ Designed to memorialize and honor victims of police violence in the United States, each sculpture is named after and dedicated to unarmed victims who have died at the hands of law enforcement.
Meanwhile, 2021 saw Biggers occupy the Rockefeller Center in New York with a monumental sculpture titled Oracle. The 25-foot tall bronze sculpture combined inspirations from African masks and European figures to explore “historical depictions of the body and their subsequent myths, narratives, perceptions, and power.”
In addition to the unique career possibilities afforded by the latest position at Biggers’ studio, the company's latest Archinect Jobs posting is notable too for its inclusion of a salary range. As we recently covered across our editorial, New York-based adverts such as Biggers' are subject to new salary transparency laws which recently took effect in New York City, joining similar moves by cities and states across the U.S.
