The Partnership for New York City has surveyed more than 160 major Manhattan office employers over the past two weeks to get a sense of the number of employees that have returned to office work or are still working remotely.
They found that 49% of workers were at their office workplace on an average weekday, with the share of fully-remote employees dropping from 28% in April to 16% in mid-September. According to the survey, the share of Manhattan workers in the office is expected to gradually increase through 2022 reaching 54% by January 2023.
The number of employees working on a hybrid office schedule sits at 77%, with 55% of surveyed responses indicating that at least three days a week are spent at the office.
The researchers found that 54% of employers expect their office employee headcount to increase or stay the same over the next five years, with 10% expecting a decline.
In addition, most employers don’t have plans to reduce their real estate footprint in New York City, even as remote work remains a popular option.

Can't fool me. Overwhelming majority of people I have seen with surveys online and in threads all prefer working from home. It just doesn't look good for the COBD architecture industry when people realize our buildings are not really needed, right?
I despise working from home and I have my own office in my house. I value the separation of home and work life and I'm dumbfounded when people don't see to care.
I worked from home yesterday because my kid was home sick from school. I spent most of the day trying to catch a lizard that she found in my house, answer questions about tree sloths, and put the heads back on her dolls that she decapitated.
I love WFH, more time to troll Canadians, and their penchant for vegimite.
is vegimite good in a poutine?
If my commute was less than an hour I'd have fundamentally different opinions than I do.
Mixed bag for me - PMs don't want to return and their team are not incentivized to come to an empty office. Which is great for those who are within a short commute of the office and don't mind the option of coming to the office when they like it.
