A lunar addition to Dubai’s burgeoning Space Age aesthetic may soon grace the city’s skyline thanks to a new tourist destination and astronaut training facility proposal by a Canadian venture called Moon World Resorts Inc.
Arabian Business has picked up details of the so-called Moon Dubai project, which is said to total 735 feet (224 meters) in height and will take around 48 months to complete once the final approval is given to designs first drawn up by the company’s co-founding architects Sandra G. Matthews and Michael R. Henderson.
Vaguely resembling the presence of Buckminster Fuller’s famed Expo 67 Pavilion or one of the forthcoming (reviled) MSG Spheres, the structure is being marketed as a shot in the arm for Dubai’s hospitality and entertainment industries and will be surrounded by a “lunar colony” that is expected to receive up to 2.5 million visitors annually. The designers stated that this number could easily swell to around 10 million. According to their proposal, the majority will be in pursuit of the yet-unoffered thrill of “affordable space tourism.”
The project will also feature roughly 300 or so private luxury residential units and double as training grounds for astronauts from the country’s newly-funded space agency, although technical details on that specific element of the project are still missing. Expected resort amenities such as a nightclub, lounge, spa, and events center are all said to be included. Visitors will likewise be transported via a built-in “moon shuttle.” As the online business publication reported, the project will seek to obtain LEED Gold certification and cost more than $5 billion USD to construct.
Matthews and Henderson said they are prepared to complete up to four similar designs in Asia and the MENA region over the course of the next decade. Henderson also mentioned his hope that the Dubai project will help “firmly plant the UAE flag into the forefront of space exploration,” before stating finally that its realization would "[double] annual tourism visitations to Dubai based on its global appeal [and] brand awareness."

By the light of the silvery moon
I want to spoon
To my honey, I'll croon love's tune
Honey moon, keep a-shinin' in June
Your silvery beams will bring love's dreams
We'll be cuddlin' soon
By the silvery moon
Etc.
Babel on.
