For the inaugural edition of our Meet Your Next Employer series, we shine the spotlight on New York-based Lang Architecture.
From their studio on Broadway in Manhattan, the firm is led by principal Drew Lang, who started the practice having settled in NYC after his architectural training at Yale University: A journey he outlined in a 2020 feature on Archinect.
Now counting over a dozen members, the firm is currently advertising for three positions on Archinect Jobs: a Project Architect, a Project Designer, and an Interior Designer.
Through what Lang calls “generational sustainability through connected design,” the studio places a strong emphasis on collaborations, dialogues, and partnerships in its work. This attention to dialogue includes client-facing discussions about needs and desires but also extends into the design community itself. “Collaboration with artists, craftspeople, and the design community is essential to our approach,” Lang notes.
Beyond practice, this belief in collaboration led Lang to create the Brick & Wonder collective, a network of design and real estate professionals encompassing everything from lighting designers and photographers to real estate brokers and filmmakers. In addition to expanding their professional network, Lang’s platform also conducts members-only events including roundtable discussions, site visits, and workshops.
Back at Lang’s New York studio, the firm’s attention to collaborations is a constant theme throughout their projects. For their Carroll Gardens Townhouse in Brooklyn, for example, traditional craftspeople worked alongside general contractors to restore timeless Italianate details within the rowhouse, complimented by the careful addition of new custom steel windows and balustrades.
This urban townhouse renovation, and a similar scheme in nearby Chelsea, is contrasted by larger new-build projects in rural upstate New York. Most significant of all is Hudson Woods, a collection of 26 dwellings on a 131-acre forested site, for which Lang Architecture sourced and purchased the land, raised capital, and formed a development team.
Over a six-year span until its 2020 completion, the project saw Lang design, build, brand, and sell the 26 homes, each defined by a use of local wood and stone which, similar to their urban schemes, was crafted with local tradespeople.
“We are, at our core, about people,” Lang says. “In the office, with our clients and collaborators, in communities, and beyond. This perspective drives a vibrant energy and open environment of mutual respect and collaboration that forms the firm’s culture, drawing on each person’s unique passion and talent, to develop meaningful connections through our work.”
