Historical preservation, maintenance and conservation efforts across New York City have lagged severely in the past decade, particularly in communities that lack the local funding necessary for the upkeep of their parks and monuments. With this in mind, the most important cultural agency within state government is looking for a civically-minded architect that can provide support in a number of different critical areas.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation (NYS OPRHP) is now hiring an Assistant Architect that will play a part in the ongoing and exciting preservation and development efforts taking place in the Greatest City in the World.
The office is responsible for the stewardship of 178 state parks and 35 historical sites in addition to the 19 heritage areas which are in their charge. In the past, outside architects have been able to work within OPRHP's holdings to author long-lasting and meaningful enhancements and interventions to significant sites like the Niagara Falls Visitor Center and Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn. Now, with the future of state parks and historic sites in the city in mind, the opportunity is present for a well-qualified architect to ply their trade in an important practice area with the potential to impact the lives of more than 8 million New Yorkers. May has been declared as Preservation Month across New York state, providing whoever steps into the role with a warm welcome in addition to a potentially expanded list of sites courtesy of the state's new chief executive.
Candidates should come to the job with sharp communications skills and direct experience in the procurement of contracts and project management. Experience in the design of buildings done under the supervision of a licensed architect or professional engineer is mandatory. This is a provisional full-time position based in the five boroughs that will become permanent upon the satisfactory completion of a state-administered exam.
Information about applying to the position can be found in the listing posted to our employment board on January 21st.
