Energy efficiency among New York City buildings has improved a bit, but almost half of those forced to post a grade are still failing. According to The City’s analysis of preliminary data from the Department of Buildings, 48.3 percent of buildings received either a D or F grade. Receiving a D is essentially the worst a building can do, as Fs are reserved for properties that don’t submit data. — The Real Deal
More than 20,000 buildings exceeding 25,000 square feet were surveyed. As reported by The Real Deal, the share of Ds dropped to 39.2 percent from 44.1 percent from the same time last year, indicating some of the least energy-efficient buildings made improvements. The share of F grades, however, increased from 7.6 to 9.1 percent.
The grades are calculated based on an Energy Star metric comparing the energy consumption of buildings across the country with those of similar densities and uses. While landlords currently do not get fined for poor grades, beginning in 2024, Local Law 97 will subject building owners to a fine of $268 per ton of greenhouse gas emissions above a certain limit.

the apartment complexes are still better than the rich and multiple houses, no?
So just demolish them and “build back better”(!)
I don't remember Kevin Lynch ever writing about energy report cards on every building in The Image of the City but this can't be good for people's overall impression and self-esteem. I guess some people at DOB understand the need for self-flagellation better than I do. But if I were a developer or looking to put my HQ somewhere why I would I want to struggle with this crap? wonder if DOB ever thinks about all the energy use it takes to retrofit buildings. All the hours of inconvenience while the buildings are under construction.
Why would you want to "struggle with this crap"? Perhaps you missed this, but presumably because the numbers behind the reports cards will soon have financial implications "Beginning in 2024...Local Law 97 will subject building owners to a fine of $268 per ton of greenhouse gas emissions above a certain limit"?
I agree. We should have a DOB that bends over backwards for developers and corporations, fuck the rest of the residents of the city and certainly fuck the planet. Profits on a scorched cinder for all! Wait, no, not all. Profits for the SHAREHOLDERS and CEOs!
