Scottish architecture firm Kettle Collective has announced plans to build one of the world’s tallest buildings. The tower will be located in St. Petersburg, Russia and stand at 703 meters, making it the second tallest building in the world.
While shorter than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the 150-story Lakhta Center II will feature the highest occupied floor and viewing gallery of any building in the world at 590 meters. The tower will be located on the outskirts of St. Petersburg and will sit next to the Lakhta Center, Europe’s tallest building and the headquarters of Russian energy company Gazprom.
Design lead and Kettle Collective founder Tony Kettle was previously the design director for Edinburgh architecture practice RMJM and created the competition-winning design for the 462-meter-tall Lakhta Center. The project was later handed over to Russian architect GORPROJECT to complete.
Lakhta Center II will house pioneering multi-car lifts, powered by regenerating energy from their own movement. It will also house offices, living, and relaxation spaces.
“The new Lakhta Center will be a template of sustainable design for global high-rise projects,” says Tony Kettle. “It will have the best in class low energy design and a mix of uses that will create a vertical atrium space with a vibrant centre as the heart for this new business district.”
“The design is both aesthetic and functional as it will reduce considerable wind forces that will impact the structure, in turn reducing the size of structural elements required within the building,” he adds. “The outer layer of the building is created from spiralling columns that form an open organic helical diagrid, while the structure is carved out by a series of spiral atriums shared with green vertical spaces.”
Kettle Collective was founded in 2012 with a focus on creating high-performance and energy-efficient designs.

Island fortress needle? I don't get it.
Who aims to be 2nd?
In elementary school I learned that second is the best.
"The Olympics is really my favorite sporting event. Although, I think I have a problem with that silver medal. Because when you think about it, you win the gold - you feel good, you win the bronze - you think, "Well, at least I got something". But when you win that silver it's like, "Congratulations, you almost won. Of all the losers you came in first of that group. You're the number one loser. No one lost ahead of you!" - Seinfeld.
