HENN and C.F. Møller Architects win first prize for the new Grosshadern Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) Clinic Campus, triumphing over 17 other planning teams who competed for the commission. The architects plan to transform the existing structures to create a green, connected, and friendly environment for medical care, research, and education.
"...we are looking forward to continuing our work in collaboration with HENN and the rest of the team as well as LMU to realize a new building and a campus which meet the structural demands and requirements of a university hospital of the future and at the same time enhance the urban image based on Healing Architecture principles and by putting people in the center," said Klavs Hyttel, Partner at C.F. Møller Architects, in a statement.
The new building comprises a total of six new clinical centers and is the largest public construction project in Bavaria since the hospital was built in the 1960s/70s. Three centers will be introduced: the cardiopulmonary vascular center, the oncology center, and the new diagnostic center, which will be built on an area totaling roughly 70,000 square meters.
Greenspace will be an important characteristic in the new design, introducing park area that will contribute to meeting space for visitors, patients, staff, and students.
Moreover, upon demolition of the existing structures, a new structure made up of modules will create a more open experience, with scattered courtyards and exterior circulation.
"The...structure represents flexibility and usage variance and promotes exchange and communication," said Marcus Fissan, Partner at HENN. "In addition, the integration of nature as a healing element as well as ecological sustainability is of particular importance to us. The new approaches will have a noticeably positive impact on every patient's stay and will raise the working conditions in nursing and research, and thus medical care, to a new level. We look forward to continuing the jointly developed ideas and concepts for shaping the university hospital of the future."
