The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced the recipients of its 2020 architecture awards.
The four winning designers were selected from a pool of 34 applications, according to the Academy website, and were vetted by a jury chaired by Annabelle Selldorf that also included Peter Eisenman, Steven Holl, James Polshek, Billie Tsien, and Tod Williams.
The academy’s four prizes will bring $10,000 in funding each to five designers and architectural thinkers who seek to push architecture into new realms of creativity and exploration.
Tehrani, who is principal of Boston-based NADAAA and is also the dean of Cooper Union’s Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, was awarded for “significant contribution to architecture as an art.” Previously published on Archinect: Nader Tehrani on Thesis and Its History at Cooper Union.
The New York City-based firm Bade Stageberg Cox was awarded as “American architects whose work is characterized by a strong personal direction.” The practice is led by Timothy Bade, Jane Stageberg, and Martin Cox. Previously published on Archinect: 13 Featured Architecture Jobs at Women-Led Firms.
New Orleans-based architect Jonathan Tate was awarded for “strong personal direction” of his firm’s work. Tate is the founder of the practice Office of Jonathan Tate.
Kevin Lippert
Lippert is the founder of the Princeton Architectural Press and was awarded as “an American who explores ideas in architecture through any medium of expression.” Previously published on Archinect: Building Books: PAPress
Ochsendorf is a structural engineer and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who was also awarded as “an American who explores ideas in architecture through any medium of expression.“
