People's Architecture Office has applied their unique approach to accessible and affordable design to the new office headquarters for the Leping Foundation. Known for creating modular buildings with portable, detachable parts, the Beijing-based studio has completed a flexible office design promoting social well-being for the equally impressive and socially conscious non-profit.
One of the largest funders of social entrepreneurs in China, the organization offers job training for migrant workers, supports agricultural research, is working to improve preschool education, and provides micro-financing. As for the ideal office space, the Foundation's CEO Jaff Shen says "the most important thing is to create an environment that encourages innovation in a perceptible way, where highly motivated individuals can take part in forming an environment that fosters creativity."
Housing such a range of diverse needs, the program provides flexible space for each distinct company while tying them together through a central 'activity loop', described by the architects as a loop of suspended vegetation mirrored by a running track underneath. The planted loop incorporates an advanced air filtration system—and grows vegetables and herbs that are used to prepare lunches—while the running track promotes physical activity and provides space for movement.
Throughout the office, everything is designed to create small social spaces allowing for collaboration and interaction between team members, departments, and companies. The studio's signature People's Canopy is integrated in the design, and can be expanded to create a separate meeting space; a 'mini mountain' sits at one end of the office to create casual work space promoting different postures; and an open kitchen and dining space is used to create daily communal activity.
In a video for the project, one employee notes of the new office that "information flows more freely so there is a better understanding between different areas of work and the resources that are available." Another comments on how the ample light and air purification system help promote a healthy working environment, which is to say: the design successfully does its job of bolstering the productivity and happiness of employees.
