Esteemed designer and entrepreneur John Cary created the book “Design for Good: A New Era of Architecture for Everyone” to bring attention to impactful designs that address critical issues of inequity and accessibility, as well as challenge the widespread assumption that good design is a luxury. Thanks to publisher Island Press, Archinect is giving away five copies of the book to our readers!
The book starts with a foreword by philanthropist Melinda Gates. “Great design is not a finite resource; it is a choice we can all make by listening more, empathizing more, and demanding more for humanity,” Gates writes.
The book highlights 20 human-centered projects from around the world that not only demonstrate how design can elevate communities, but how it can be achieved. It features in-depth interviews with designers, clients, and users, alongside full-color photographs.
Some of the featured projects include the Maternity Waiting Village in rural Malawi, which provides local women with immediate access to expert medical care; the Star Apartments in Los Angeles' Skid Row, which serve homeless people and offer on-site mental health services; and projects based in Guangdong, China, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and more.
Not surprisingly, the book has been well received. "These solutions, this book, matter deeply to a field searching for its highest calling and to a world in need of our best efforts,” IDEO CEO Tim Brown commented.
“A visual testament to the fact that every human being has the right to live a healthy, dignified life…If questions about the uncertain future of global health keep you up at night, this book is for you,” says Barbara Bush, Co-founder and CEO of Global Health Corps.
