“The Structure of Design: An Engineer's Extraordinary Life in Architecture” examines the long career of Leslie Earl Robertson, one of the most celebrated structural engineers in modern architecture. Thanks to publisher The Monacelli Press, Archinect is giving away five copies of the book to our readers! Read on for more about the book.
In this personal and accessible chronicle of the engineer's innovative career, Robertson details the partnerships and problem-solving that have forged classics of modern architecture including the IBM buildings in Pittsburgh and Seattle, the World Trade Center in New York, AT&T Headquarters in New York, the Parliament House in Canberra, Australia, the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, the Suzhou Museum, the Miho Museum Bridge, and the Shanghai World Financial Center.
Through reflections on his own experiences, Robertson offers an understanding of the joys and tribulations young architects and engineers can expect in their careers, as well as how technology has changed the profession. His advice is inspirational and practical, encouraging beginning professionals to proactively use their careers to address the needs of the citizens of their shared planet. He writes, “Concerns for society, both domestic and overseas, should be the foundation of your life.”
On September 7, join Leslie E. Robertson for a free-to-the-public book talk on “The Structure of Design” at the Skyscraper Museum in New York City.
