Preliminary plans have been revealed for two more residential projects that together “would add more than 2,100 residential units and 1.7 million square feet” to Two Bridges, the area along the East River where the Lower East Side meets Chinatown. A building at 271-283 South Street may rise 60 stories, while another at 260 South Street could reach 66 stories. See how this planned and under-construction new development will alter the LES skyline through CityRealty.com's Google Earth rendering. — 6sqft.com

I understand the economic theory, but let's not destroy every good nyc neighborhood .... de Blasio somehow thinks these developments have something to do with affordable housing... What a sham. They are all greasing each other's pockets.... In related news, Bjarke Ingels gave a talk at Goldman Sachs, so there's that.
LES is this area that still has that NYC feel and discoverability factor, it fucking goes on forever pass the subway stop.....not once have I successfully managed to get the hell out of there after a late night of drinking....and now it will be like every other part, at least i will get home on time.
Some places just need to be left with out high rises. What if we build a wall of high rises around the island with excellent water views at the expense of the rest of the citizens? I would have thought DeBlasio would have known better.
This is what happens when you have economists and technocrats in charge of urban planning rather than architects. Someone needs to stand up for quality of life. Not everyone in the world with fit in a few cities... Why not develop elsewhere?
This rendering shows new high-rise buildings in the open space between Robert Moses era (high-rise) apartment buildings. Perhaps it is better to keep open space, but it does not look like these are planned for the part of the LES with the neighborhood feel.

I agree 100%. The only reference point I've ever had in the LES is Arlene's Grocery and it looks different outside every time I stumble out of there after a show. I think I've wandered in every direction leaving that place and I've always walked by something new.
All of these renderings of New York's future skyline have me down. Long live Zombie Urbanism!
De Blasio and Kimmelman are two peas in a pod. Using liberal politics to grease their pockets but not showing up when details matter.
