Patrik Schumacher + Tom Wiscombe: Duel + Duet | May 17, recommended by Paul Petrunia

Patrik Schumacher, the longest employee at Zaha Hadid Architects, and the newly appointed principal since Hadid’s death last month, is commonly known for his love of parametricism, libertarianism, and Facebook rants. Tom Wiscombe has been teaching at SCI-Arc for over a decade, and is the current chair of the B.Arch program. On Tuesday, May 17th, Tom and Patrik will have a conversation in front of an audience at SCI-Arc. What will they discuss? You won’t know unless you go. In the Gutter: "Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont" book signing and reading | May 21, recommended by Amelia Taylor-Hochberg

Described as “a kind of Hollywood version of Waiting for Godot”, Aris Janigian's new book, “Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont” is a philosophical and cutting look at California urbane society, in all of its contradictions and dramas. Formerly senior professor of Humanities at SCI-Arc, Janigian's stories weave architecture and cities into the essence of his characters, and this reading from his latest isn't to be missed.

Beyond the Frame: New Media Arts from Taiwan | Open now until June 19, recommended by Alexander Walter

The Long Beach Museum of Art takes a peek over the Pacific and presents six Taiwanese new media artists who continue to push the boundaries in the face of ever-advancing media technologies. Works explore the disciplines of video art, virtual art, interactive art, and – you guessed it – robotics.

We Were Here: Absence of the Figure | Open now until July 10, recommended by Justine Testado

Highlighting the Orange County Museum of Art's recent acquisitions into its permanent collection, “We Were Here” takes a different approach to our relationship with the built and natural environments. The exhibition explores the persistence of human presence in place and time through modern-day interpretations of landscape, object, and everyday environments — from empty bus stops to the ecological impact of building materials. If you missed this past weekend's artists' talk, the exhibition is open until July 10.
