Online job boards burst with ads recruiting “idea people” and “out of the box” thinkers. We are taught that our own creativity will be celebrated as well, and that if we have good ideas, we will succeed. It’s all a lie.

Is this a serious headline? Or is it general consensus that no one should be responsible for their own happiness?
Seriously. This only fosters negativity in the profession. I heard the fashion industry is having difficulty sourcing enough black pigment to cloth all those camping in creative positions, those who have surrendered to the system, and those seeking temporary placation during the day because you don't "like" what you do.
Just another example of the media's excessive-patina job on the internet; at this rate it won't even survive for our kids to benefit from.
Agree with the article, but think it also has to do with the fact that Creative people tend to be more introverted. The workplace and overall game of life is designed for extroverts. They can't absorb an idea unless it's delivered by a loud salesman.
This subject touches the surface of many conflicts of interest and contradictory aspects of the design profession.
I once worked at a prominent architecture firm doing mostly conceptual urban design. This firms main selling point in the city design world was to create mixed use, livable, 24-hr safe and accessible cities that the citizen could enjoy. Promoting all these "enjoy your city" ideas when at the same time the designers would work 12+ hrs and never get to enjoy their beautiful city.
This introduced a concept to me that makes absolutely no sense: That is to basically punish those creative folks that put together the design of cities of the future, selling livable cities, but unable to live them themselves. Punished to enjoy the progressive features of the cities they design, but from the office desk at 11pm.

Worse is things that are called "creative" that are just another form of conforming.
