“In the design, I would like to say there are no similarities at all,” Kuma told reporters when asked about Hadid’s claims. [...]
“The conditions set for the competition mean that automatically some similarities emerge ... the concept is completely different, so it is absolutely a different building, despite the similarities”. [...]
Hadid’s office is reportedly consulting lawyers, and said it would “take legal action if our concerns are not promptly addressed to our satisfaction”.

It doesn't look any more or less similar to me than does any stadium built in the last ten years.
Hadid drops a turd then proceeds to jump up and down on it with both feet while screaming and waving her arms. LOL
Wow ZHD. The similarities are uncanny. I mean not only is it also a stadium but it is intended to fit the same amount of people as yours 0_0 and wait a minute, does it also contain seats? I even heard that like yours, all the seats face the field. Are those Columns? He had the audacity to suggest also using columns!? Get those lawyers on the phone.
Not only that it's on the very same site. Better call Saul.
No idea how legitimate the claim of copying is, but its deeper than columns and shape. They did 2 years of work and figured out how to get in and out of the building safely, did a good amount of technical work and so on. And the firm that Zaha did that with is the one that Kuma is working with now. So they want to use all that stuff. Cuz without it they would have to spend 2 years catching up...or something like that.
I take it that Zaha is saying no to that, and so they are withholding the last payment. I'm reading between the lines a bit, but that appears to be the situation. Its not as headline ready but I think that is what is actually happening.
As far as it goes there is some truthiness in the claim. And some actual truth too. Its a pity the govt chose to blame Zaha for the cost overruns instead of thinking about hte possibility that the bidding system made it impossible for her to ever get a competitive bid (ie, no way would there ever be an option to use an international company already set up to work with BIM - something Japan is not really into yet). The scale and layout were also mandated by the client.
What is true though is that Kuma understands very well how to work within the limitations of the Japanese system, and knows how to make it work for him to achieve the effects that he is exceptional at. Zaha never had that, and I guess really she never thought it was something that she needed to manage as an office. Japan is a special place and some care and attention is needed. Which is why we are where we are. Bad communication really. Such a pity. It could have gone much better with a bit of effort on both sides...
Impressive work!
