No two people, let alone architects, perceive even the most frequented cities in the same way. How do designers experience their cities as locals? Archinect got in touch with Scott Durst, owner of Chicago-based seDURST, who shared a snappy list of go-to places where he likes to spend his "spiritual off-time" around the city.
Oh, Chicago: Home to nearly 3 million people and, of course, the great abundance of landmarks that draw in some 40 million visitors every year. Moving forward from its rich architectural history, the city will host the very first Chicago Architecture Biennial: The State of the Art of Architecture, starting October 3. So whether you're planning your first or your 10th voyage to the Windy City, give Scott Durst's suggestions a whirl. You might discover something new.
1. The J. Parker — Chicago Rooftop Restaurant
1816 N Clark Street, 13th Floor, Chicago IL, 60614
I recommend this Lincoln Park retreat because it's a roof top bar overlooking Lake Michigan and downtown Chicago. Excellent for viewing the high-rises of Chicago and beautiful blue waters of the lake. I tend to drink a local Revolution Beer and stare out onto the lake reminding myself why living in Chicago is so damn cool (amazing).
2. Walking in Lincoln Park
Starting at the corner of N. Burling Street and W. Armitage Ave in Chicago, IL
The residents will hate me for putting this street out there, but this is a beautiful street of Old Chicago and New Chicago homes that are worth walking down if you're into residential design. You can find just about any style house here from Contemporary to French Baroque, to traditional American with pitched roofs and wood siding. A highly affluent area, which is why I love to come here with my wife to dream.
3. Paramount Room
415 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago IL 60654
Who doesn't love exposed brick, dense seating, and $1 oysters from 3-6PM 7 days a week. Although this restaurant / bar looks slightly dodgy from the outside, its an intimate dark lit and cozy bar with excellent food and beer. The unique tightness of the main level brings back memories of the 4 1/2 years I spent in London. I prefer ordering 10 oysters, a small order of frites, and this special gem of a deal, the $5 tequila shot and PBR.
4. Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
951 Chicago Ave, Oak Park, IL 60302
After spending many years touring and experiencing the architecture of Europe, nothing could be more special and sacred to American architecture than the home and studio of FLW. This stunning piece of architecture is the Pantheon of the USA. To tour this home is an awe inspiring experience into the mind and evolution of FLW. I've toured this home 3 times, and every time I walk away speechless and overwhelmed.
5. BYOB Sailing
The Loop, 490 East Lower Randolph, Chicago IL, 60601
This is a great deal, and most importantly, a relaxing time to spend with your friends and family. This BYOB sailing experience is a great way to get out on the water, experience the Chicago skyline, and enjoy a little wine while thinking about your next ventures.
