"This is the toughest [hiring] market I've seen in at least 20 years." — Crains New York
Intermediate architects with five to seven years of experience who are versed in BIM and other architectural design software are the Hope Diamond to employers; rare, expensive, and highly sought after. According to an article in Crains New York, in London, Hong Kong, and New York City especially, employers are facing an incredibly tough hiring market. The employers are having to either reframe their expectations or seek less experienced employees who show exceptional promise or talent. This all translates into higher salaries for those few candidates who do fulfill the job requirements, with an average salary increase of between 10 to 15 percent. This report reflects the incredible number of new job listings on Archinect, which has been seeing an unprecedented level of traffic over the past year.
As is the case with Michael Szerbaty, many architectural firms have placed advertisements for jobs and seen them remain unfilled for months at a time. As we've previously reported on Archinect, the substantial gap in qualified intermediate candidates is due in part to the harsh economic climate of 2008, in which thousands of architects had to take up other forms of work in order to survive. Another factor in the shortage is the proliferation of increasingly sophisticated software which updates year by year, requiring employees to remain educated and active in their field. Those architects who sought other work and did not keep up on their technical software skills may find that their emails go unreturned.

I happen to be one of the above, once I survived the great cull of '08, and 09' - Revit Rat/Ninja depending on who you talk to - yes things are better - had 3 interviews in the last 5 days - But unless I show progress on ARE and IDP - I too could be culled when the next recession hits - I am always looking over my shoulder - learning is the best prevention to career failure.
xenakis...dude bro, you gotta chill.
I am saying this in all seriousness, your attitude is balls. If you put out 1% of the fear, paranoia, or general anxiety that you perpetuate in these forums in your real life, people/employers sense that and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you are constantly worried about getting fired, you are going to get fired, simple as that.
Sack up, know your worth, don't let employers push you around, be positive and crush it.
To the rest of the intermediate architects out there time to make $$! be positive and crush it!
No more - I just got a new job - a direct hire no less at a firm that designs type I,II and V multi-family residences. I built this waterproofing BIM model back when I was doing Kaiser Hospital work. Might be right to modify it for Multi-family projects - in 3D it is easier to see how the flashing works or does not - less guesswork - on the Kaiser Project, we created the 3D wall details, made views to show OSPD.
