Behold the almighty skyscraper, both a historical architectural feat and a signifier of change -- whether in an idealistic sense or not -- in the urban landscape. In relation to that, eVolo Magazine hosted another year of their popular Skyscraper Competition, which gives participants worldwide the freedom to conjure up their own skyscrapers as a way to challenge how we understand vertical architecture and its relationship to the natural and built environment.
This year's competition brought in 408 entries from all seven continents, from vertical getaways, protective bio-habitats, arctic structures, to atmospheric labs. In the end, the 2015 jury (listed at the bottom) chose three top winners:
2ND PRIZE: "Shanty-Scaper" by Suraksha Bhatla and Sharan Sundar | India
3RD PRIZE: "Cybertopia" by Egor Orlov | Russia
The jury selected 15 more different skyscraper approaches as honorable mentions, which you can check out in the thumbnail gallery below. Find each HM's full details here and here.
The 2015 jury members included Massimiliano Fuksas [principal Studio Fuksas]; Michael Hansmeyer [CAAD group at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology]; Richard Hassell [principal WOHA]; Alvin Huang [principal Synthesis Design + Architecture]; Yong Ju Lee [winner 2014 eVolo Skyscraper Competition]; Wenchian Shi [project manager MVRDV]; Wong Mun Summ [principal WOHA]; and Benedetta Tagliabue [principal EMBT Miralles Tagliabue].
