Nothing screams commitment like something that is built on a concrete foundation and set in stone: literally. Go ahead, then. Design something that will last forever. — CollegeAtlas
While people working in architecture, whether through practice or academia, can give insight into the reality of the field, how does broader modern society perceive architects and architecture as a career?
In one of the more amusing approaches to that topic, sexy has stood as one assumption, especially when it comes to dating or looking for an ideal partner. According to one cringe-worthy heteronormative list aptly titled "Top 10 Sexiest Jobs for Men" by higher-education online database CollegeAtlas.org, Architect ranked as number 1 -- accompanied by some oh-so-thoughtful commentary that is just comical gold (but not really). There's a list for women too, but Architect or anything closely related to the field didn't make the cut. Big surprise.
Quite similarly, Mary Balfour of a dating agency called Drawing Down the Moon conducted a survey in 2012/13 that asked men and women what jobs they considered the most attractive. Those results showed that men working as an Architect or Designer ranked high, and were perceived as "stylish and cool." Not so much for women though. Why is that?
On the other hand, British GQ writer Victoria Coren made yet another "sexiest jobs ever" list that ranked Architect as number 5 -- but with a punch of snark: "I'm joking. It's not 1997."

This list is adorable!
I couldn't help but notice that it's the *teacher* wearing the enormous watch.
Do physical therapists really make more money than architects?
And let's be honest: engineers will definitely solve complex problems, but not in any way that resonates meaningfully for anyone but another engineer. They need architects for that. Remember: Culture is a protein, not a dessert. - Sean Starowitz
Excellent write-up, Justine!
Picking a career based on what is perceived to be the sexiest profession. We're doomed.
i've met a couple of sexy architets. one has commented above and, hint, it isn't miles. (although he may be very sexy.)
I've met many sexy architects too and one has commented above (and hint though I've never met him I am also inclined to believe that Miles is very sexy).
On the other hand I don't know that I've ever met a sexy police officer but damn firefighters are hot.
Why thank you, Donna!
I like the complimentary sexy chain that's starting here. Ya'll are hilarious.
I know I get laid all. the. time.
Until they look at an architect's pay stub.
Police instead of firefighter?
Name like 'Vado retro' smells sexy.....must be a subconscious maneuver I pulled today after reading this earlier - I contacted my tailor to help me simplify and make regimented my attire so I don't have to think about looking sexy everyday... i am tired of having a bad shirt day when I randomly meet a potential client. I mean even the Engineer in this list dresses better than me.
vado, I'm assuming architet is the feminine version of architect?
Donna, How you doin?
