The whitewashing and subsequent demolition of Long Island City graffiti mecca 5Pointz was painful enough for the arts community, but now G&M Realty, the developer responsible for the loss, wants to trademark the 5Pointz name and use it for their new residential towers at the site. And artists are not happy, saying the developer is trying to bank off their name. — 6sqft

Co-opting the cool cachet is the part M.O. for every gentrification effort across the globe. Artists won't win because they've already lost...
Trademarking potential development names might be like those folks who snagged .com domain names.
How many people want to live in 1234 West what ever street when they can live in Five Pointz Vista Gardens, or something less housing project like.
The notoriety of the name will only last long enough to sell the condos and help the developer cash out then the place will be a joke or nothing special at all and then some new developer will come in and place their name on it and the branding games begin.
RIP 5Pointz
I hope someone else copyrighted it first, wouldn't that just stick it to them.
Check out our competition proposal for a DE-gentrificaiton of 5 PTZ
