Archinect's Must-Do Picks for Archtober 2014 - Week 2 (Oct. 9-16)

Archtober–New York City's Architecture and Design Month–is back for another year. The anticipated month-long festival from Oct. 1-31, 2014 continues to grow with a variety of engaging exhibitions, conferences, films, tours, and other activities for all ages to celebrate the value of architecture and design in everyday life.

From the long list of Archtober events, here are some exciting highlights worth checking out from Oct. 9-16:
- Jordi Fauli Fall 2014 Sciame Lecture Series on Gaudí’s Unfinished Masterpiece: The Sagrada Família Church | Oct. 9
The Gaudí lecture series continues with Jordi Faulí i Oller, who is currently the Head Architect and Coordinator of the work on the Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain. Fauli will lecture on the topic, "The Project and the Construction of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia." - Building of the Day: Kickstarter | Oct. 9
Take a tour of Kickstarter's headquarters: a 29,000 SF adaptive re-use of one of Greenpoint’s landmarked pencil factories that houses all of Kickstarter’s 120 employees and operations. - Heavy Metal: Factory Tour of Ferra Designs | Oct. 10
Visitors go behind-the-scenes on a factory tour of metal masters Ferra Designs. From design offices to the factory floor to the new product design studio, 50A, visitors get to experience the factory's masterful craftsmanship of precision metal fabrication. - City by Numbers: Big Data and the Urban Future | Oct. 11
Pratt Institute and Places Journal present the "City by Numbers: Big Data and the Urban Future" symposium. The symposium will discuss how Big Data—the exponential growth and availability of information—affects different aspects of society and how people understand, experience, and create the built environment. - Heritage Under Siege from Aleppo to Zanzibar | Oct. 14
Join the World Monuments Fund for an evening lecture that highlights the struggles and efforts to protect and conserve the world's most historic monuments against an unpredictable race against time with threats like natural disaster, warfare, and civil and religious conflict. - Guggenheim Helsinki Competition: Designing a Museum of the Future | Oct. 15
From the highly debatable Guggenheim Helsinki Competition launched by the museum this past June, visitors can join speakers for a broad-ranging discussion of topics raised by the competition that are redefining the future of the contemporary art museum and the practice of architecture. - Architecture & Design Film Festival | Oct. 15-19
The Architecture & Design Film Festival, the largest film festival in the nation, will feature more than 30 films, panel discussions, book signings, and Q&A with design leaders and filmmakers from around the globe. - Building of the Day: Post-Disaster Urban Interim Housing | Oct. 16
Check out Garrison Architects' modular post-disaster housing prototype, which aims to provide New Yorkers not only with reliable and adaptable emergency shelter, but also to keep residents close to their communities and reduce the necessity of long-term displacement in the event of a catastrophic natural or manmade disaster.
