5 Pointz, New York City’s “graffiti mecca,” is being demolished right now. This morning, a backhoe began tearing into the building that has served as a legal spot for aerosol artists for over two decades. In 2011, the property owner announced that he will be developing the site and transforming it into a massive residential condo complex. — animalnewyork.com

That's awful. And to turn it into something so lavish. Ridiculous, that's honestly destroying culture.
Incredibly irresponsible development going in in NYC, it's not just the destruction of landmarks, but the complete destruction of neighborhoods and peoples lives. Years ago when they were starting this new wave of gentrification all these plans of workplaces, markets, and mixed use developments were rolled out by these developers to get the green light to do their deeds. Of course it wasn't long after the green light was given that they changed course and started building luxury condos instead. I feel comfortable saying most architects, no matter how jaded, are saddened by what's going on. Yet, what do we do? Jane Jacobs is probably getting pretty dizzy with all the spinning in her grave these days, and the public's response is nothing more than apathy...
Favorite NYC relic. Funny all these developments (also see Rizoli demo) are destroying the things that led to the increased interest in the first place.
Also the designs for the condos are awful.
