its ok by me. original gehry design was nice with a fountain in the middle for a smaller santa monica with promanade not developed yet. it blocks the north south axis rather brutally. continiuing the promanade would connect the main street city center and wilshire blvd. but i am suspicious of jerde's festivities..
But abracadabra, remember when I was a wide-eyed, bushy-tailed angeleno and you took me to see the pomo-ish jewelry store that FOG designed in the mall?? How can it be ok by you?! ;)
yes, thats a problem has to be dealt with.
i've seen fred fisher ice cream parlor come and gone, but jewel store is for special handling.
they really fucked the initial design of the mall by jazzed up remodel by others in 90's. the new design has to preserve some elements of the existing including the chain link fence that says santa monica.
arcana is still there on the prom with gary's plywood shelves (how the bookstore stays open with those rents, is beyond me). however, it moved to the other side of the street years ago. and, hennesey ingalls is now a cheap paperback 99 cent bookstore with the same morphosis facade. i go around there once in a great while.
pico and sepulveda and lincoln blvd are more real for me.
new thing is, they are going to build condolofts/retail on main street where rtd bus depot was. whole area became one big loft center.
