I was privileged to have been part of the jury for this studio, which was a rare mix of engineers, designers and visionaries. I felt completely out of my depth dialoging with JPL people about the work but I was glad I took the risk. It was a real treat to be able to evaluate design proposals with experts whose work must meet the terrifyingly high standards of performance required of the aerospace industry. My thanks go out to Michael and his students for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
I am glad that Cal Poly had this studio. Space architecture has always been a fascinating subject for me and when I was in scholl it was part of SCI-Arcs futuristic program
Twenty plus years ago SCI_Arc student John Spencer, now a player in the space tourism business, began his lifelong promotion of space tourism, including a space park in Oxnard California. At SCI -Arc John and I sponsored a lecture and large exhibit on space architecture exhibited at SCI_ARC gallery. It was a strange slide show with Cold War/pre glasnost mentality US (usa) vrs Them (soviet union) side by side slides. The gallery show was the introduction of architecture and outer-space design

SCI-ARC early on also had hands-on design studio on space design, with life size mock-ups of the module they designed - paid by a $75,000 government grant. They needed ' new ideas' ; We also had a salt water immersion / flotation tank
Director Ray Kappe own input was 5th year studio. The project of course was a space station. A SCI-Arc student placed third in the Alcoa sponsored space station competition winning $1000
The final frontier inspired many a student and I am sure that the Michael Fox studio was similar to my experience.
