Today is one of Moslem World's holiest holidays. Eid is marked by end of Hajj and many procedures around Kaaba. Relatively few people in the West know about it other than associating it with terrorist acts and wars. I thought it would be good occasion to expose this most centralized and powerful building of all Abrahamic religions and try to understand its fascinating physicality.

orhan,
i think a lot more people know about it than you think.
and i don't think anyone associates it with terrorism, because those that would associate it with terrorism would be too stupid to know what it is. they usually incorrectly associate islam with terrorism because the bigot du jour told them there was an association.
thanks for the encouraging words holz.
maybe this will help as well.
one of the most memorable conversations i've ever had was with a turkish immigrant in germany, where he was attempting (in broken german) to describe the beauty of the inflections of the adhan at dusk and the silence it created, and how he missed it.
i don't know that i'll ever understand religion, but there are moments of incredibly beauty i can comprehend. and to me, after that conversation, the adhan is one of those moments.
that is fully a poetic and spiritual description, as adhan is usually read from a loud speaker, his is a precise definition of that experience.. very powerful indeed. i can relate to that. adhan also creates a lot of "space" with words.
