Firefighters were able to save around 70 per cent of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed building’s contents during the blaze.
But the famed Mackintosh library, which contained hundreds of rare periodicals and collections, was destroyed, along with countless works of art and the roof of the west wing.

Hearing about the loss of rare periodicals is especially disheartening. On the one hand, with today's additude towards history, it won't be much missed, but this self emposed amnesia is temporary. Sooner or later, enough people will tire of the inscessant search for the new for new's sake and look a little bit deeper to the trove of history. That's where the periodicals come in handy. Rather than reading only the history books, looking at the actual documents from history provides a much more lively and well rounded look at how people actually thought. I hope they strive to re-create both the building fabric and the library contents for the future.
