SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah College of Art and Design announces the appointment of Heriberto J. Brito as dean of the School of Building Arts.
Brito’s appointment marks his return to SCAD, where he helped shape the School of Building Arts early in the university’s history. He taught at SCAD from 1979-85 and developed the curricula for the architecture, historic preservation and interior design programs of study. Brito holds both a Bachelor of Design in Architecture degree and a Master of Arts in Architecture degree from the University of Florida. After teaching at SCAD, he was an adjunct faculty member at Georgia State University, Brenau University, and the Atlanta College of Art, among other institutions. He holds a certificate from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification and is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects. He has served as a board member and vice president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, a member of the board of visitors of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, and a patron and active member of many arts and design organizations. Brito has won numerous awards for his work, which has been widely published and exhibited, and he also serves as a Design Excellence Peer for the General Services Administration.
Brito is also principal of Brito, LLC, an interior design firm specializing in high-end residences, historic preservation projects, hospitality commissions and specialty design projects throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Europe. He has also served as a studio director, project director, preservation planner and architectural historian with a variety of firms and agencies.
Dean Brito replaces Brian Wishne, who now serves as chair of the SCAD urban design department. Prior to joining SCAD in 2008, Wishne was chair of the department of architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a faculty member in the School of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Cincinnati. Holding a Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College and a Master of Architecture from Princeton University, as well as considerable professional experience, Wishne brings expertise valuable to further the growth and development of the urban design program at SCAD.
The School of Building Arts at SCAD exists to prepare talented students for professional careers in architecture, historic preservation, international preservation, interior design and urban design. Offering Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts and Master of Urban Design degrees, and minors in architecture, cultural landscape, decorative arts, electronic design, historic preservation, interior design and urban design, SCAD teaches students to become professional architects, designers and preservationists who are strategic thinkers, global communicators, collaborative partners and ethical practitioners of the building arts.
