Envisioning Sustainable Communities: Corktown, Detroit, Michigan

This site has opportunity to be a nucleus for activity within the community. The open-air exhibition space at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull cultivate relationships and interaction within the Corktown community since the garage doors allow for pedestrians to  ow into and out of the building. The space has the potential to hold large-scale community events, selling of home-grown food products. In non-harvest months, local vendors may display a variety of arts, music, and crafts. Teaching future generations and exposing the general public to local consumerism is essential for healthy living and a prosperous society. The Sustainable Learning Center on the north end of the site is utilized as a tool for education. A forestry yard, hydroponics, retention pond, recycling, composting, and both indoor and outdoor farming areas demonstrate the benefts and potential of repurposing land. Each component of the site is strategically placed to allow occupant views to the outdoor recreation center and downtown Detroit. The historic Tiger Stadium is rededicated for the community to use for football, soccer, tennis and its original purpose; baseball. The new park heightens activity and energy about the site. The Idea Center is a manifestation of the strong history and promising future of Corktown. Reclaimed brick is used when possible connecting the building to the vernacular of the region. The mural on the west facade of the Idea Center embraces Corktown’s artistic culture and commemorates the historical value of Tiger Stadium. Rentable o ce spaces, retail, a multi-functional banquet hall, and a rentable auditorium space ensure there is a constant revenue stream for the community which propels future development.
