Dockweiler Swim Club

Research for this amphibious structure began in the wash zone with the organisms that thrive directly where the waves are crashing.

The building exists as a lifeguard training and research facility with an auxiliary swim club program.  Two separate troughs bring ocean water into heated saltwater pools: one for training and one for leisure swimming.  With its primary building materials composed of concrete and glass, this structure adheres to both wet and dry conditions.

Modeled after burrowing patterns of the sand crab, a porous concrete surface acts as a synthetic tide pool on horizontal surfaces and provides sun shading when applied vertically on the facade of the building.
