Cable Tie Lounge

This performative object was designed collaboratively for a group project and is meant to carry three people sitting or one person lying down.  This exercise began with a material exploration and we became initially intrigued by the industrial cable tie and its high performing tension strength.  This material is also widely accessible and relatively inexpensive as a material in which to form furniture.

A series of 4”, 8”, and 10” long cable ties are arranged and tied together to form a fabric that is repeated throughout the lounge.  The size of the cable ties varies according to where they are located in the form, and the end product produces a seamless banner of tightly-knit plastic that in large numbers affords a very comfortable lounging experience.
