Recasting the Gorge

The Doan Brook Gorge is a nature
watershed which locates at the common
boundary between Shaker Height and
Cleveland Height. We believe that,
the gorge, as a natural treasure of the
surrounding area, shouldn’t limit the
neighborhood's activities inside their
boundaries. On the contrary, it should be
the incentive of diverse connection. In this
study, the physical and urban morphology
of the gorge is analysed carefully. The
result is a series of intervention moments
that not only provide direct connectivities
towards both side of the brook, but
also encourage potential spontaneous
activities along the brook.
The design approach has been divided
into four parts: Stitching, Seeding,
Growing and Spreading.
STITCHING
Mapping the physiographic, ecological
and urbanistic conditions along Doan
Brook Gorge to find out the opportunities
for increased connectivity across adjacent
neighborhoods.
SEEDING
Identifying and defining the different areas
for intervention, highlighting their specific
challenges and opportunities.
GROWING
Develop the design strategies for
potential interventions activating the
targeted sites.
SPREADING
A positive influence towards the
surrounding neighborhood.
