For centuries, the city of Mombasa
has been known as the largest
seaport in East Africa and more
recently it has adopted the additional
identity of a leading tourist destination
in Kenya. This project is aimed at
revitalizing existing tourist spots in
Mvita, while creating new landmarks
to integrate Likoni mainland with the
larger tourism circuit in Mombasa.
We focus on promoting Mombasa
as a modern hub, while at the same
time maintaining its cultural identity.
Our design process is specifically
incremental in approach to ensure a
smooth transition between the two
five-year phases of development.
By focusing on various aspects
including transportation, waterfront
d e v e l o p m e n t , t o u r i s m , and
intercultural public spaces, we aim
to bridge the gap between Mvita
and Likoni to strengthen Mombasa’s
role as a principal city in Kenya and
Africa.
The main problem in the site includes:
Lack of open space due to increasing
population.
Transportation/especially amongst
islands
Inequity in living quality. Encourage
providing more public housing.
