The concept for the James Perse Malibu store at the Malibu Lumber Yard is a reflection of the quintessential Southern California lifestyle. Like James Perse clothing itself, the store combines modern elegance and simple luxury with the cool comfort of an ocean breeze.
The Malibu Lumber Yard is a sustainable retail development in Malibu, California. Located on the site of the original timber storage warehouse, the James Perse store features exterior black stained siding contrasted with a warmly illuminated white interior. Tall painted oak cabinetry, teak flooring, and an exposed Douglas fir ceiling add to the beach house atmosphere of the space.
Dramatic black stained louvered doors extend the entire length of the storefront. The mahogany louvers are adjustable to enable the manipulation of light entering the interior space. The doors pivot, open and stack to allow the storefront to be completely open to the sheltered exterior deck. What results is a seamless transition between the interior of the store and the exterior deck, which serves as an informal merchandise display area and outdoor living room.
The store layout is like that of a home, divided into the kitchen, the dining room, the living room, and the bedroom. The tall display cabinetry incorporates full height sliding panels that enable visual displays to be easily changed. Solid sliding panels allow for extra stock to be stored on the store floor, thus out of sight but within easy reach.
