Architectural Structure As an interface between smooth and striated space

The structural prototype that we have designed and tested belongs, in our understanding, to the realm of 'Deleuzian' space. We understand the Deleuzian space as the space of entanglement, or interfacing between the smooth and the striated. Superseding this fundamental opposition, Deleuzian space can be regarded as a holistic mixture of these two different spatialities.
In striated space, one closes off a surface and "allocates" it according to determinate intervals, assigned breaks; in the smooth, one "distributes" oneself in an open space, according to frequencies and in the course of one's crossings. These two functions, allocation and distribution, serve as the dominant organizational principle that differentiates smooth and striated space.
In our prototype, this conceptual framework can be observed in operation, through two generative components, the ruling and the articulating curve. These two curves inform two fundamentally different structural typologies: a vector active system and a surface active system. The main effector in both systems is a joint, which is made operational through angle differentiation.
Our study is centered around a model that combines these two regimes, in a structure that effortlessly facilitates transitions between sedentary (the space of fixed, stationary, but also domestic, populated) and nomadic (the space of movement, flight, openness, exteriority). Each of these regimes is represented by a generative geometric event. Important premise is that this structure can be further developed and infused with programmatic content, following the same logic.
