5,000 architects and designers worldwide participated in the Holiday Fair Design Competition for Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Participants were requested to submit modular proposals incorporating concepts of sustainable design with principles of retail success through innovation and social consciousness.
Translucent, angled panels with plant patterns were used to resemble a traditional and organic marketplace, as well as oak leaf-inspired shelves to match Vanderbilt Hall’s classic elements. These elements were designed with recyclable, eco-friendly materials.
Working along the green concept, a couple of renewable energy generators were proposed to sustain Grand Central Terminal’s energy source. Through sustainable energy floors and solar panel grids, heat radiation and pedestrian/vehicular kinetic energy are to be captured and stored.
