The project began with form and depth of color and space studied to produce sensual figures. An existing building in the Jewelry District Los Angeles, is to feature a “third space” and the role these sensual figures will take on that. The third space being used is a library with set requirements for program use and site coverage. A minimum of 50% and maximum of 90% of the original building must remained with a minimum of 10% outdoor space exposed to the sky. The project can also be extended to a maximum of 120 feet. The key objective is to consider the different methods of adaptive reuse, which can include additive, subtractive, responsive, and autonomous tactics. This library creates a “third space” by using light to determine program and use. Inner spaces will be less lit and quieter. Guests are encouraged to express their own personal creativity with the ability to relax in one collective space through the guidance of light and color.
