Located in the 16th Street Heights neighborhood of DC, the playground at Upshur Park will provide a much needed playspace for nearby children. In designing the playground, Landscape Architecture Bureau worked closely with the parents in the community to gather ideas for the renovated playground and park.
The composition of the playground relates to the surrounding urban fabric, organized as a series of rectangles that slide past each other; the space is symbolic of the city blocks that make up the neighborhood. Within these rectangles are new play equipment, a pavilion with a vegetated roof and a sand play area bordered by a playful fence. The rectilinear order of the playground is well balanced against the use of fieldstone walls, extensive plantings and a sloped lawn. Along with an updated play area, the renovation provides the playground with improved access and visibility from the surrounding neighborhood and provides access to those with limited mobility.
