Our clients, both winemakers, desired a new home to replace their aging farmhouse in rural Saint Helena. The house was broken into smaller interconnected volumes separated by open thoroughfares to lighten the building mass and frame the surrounding oak woodlands. A sense of warmth and light was brought to the interior spaces by opening window walls into rooms with floors and ceilings clad in natural wood. A butterfly roof was used as a playful unifying element, integrating the detached garage and open carport into the overall building design.
