Originally a Mediterranean style residence nestled in a redwood grove in the hills above Berkeley and Oakland, this home underwent extensive renovation. Core living spaces were redesigned to better capture both the sheltered intimacy of the surrounding trees and the panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay visible from the site. Central to this plan was a new curvilinear stairway designed to improve the flow of movement between adjoining rooms and heighten the experience of passing through contrasting levels of enclosure and expanse.
